Slow broadband or slow wifi? How to tell which problem you have
Almost everyone calls it slow internet, and almost everyone means one of two very different problems. Either the broadband coming into the building is slow, or the broadband is fine and the wifi is failing to carry it to the room you are in. The distinction matters because the fixes have nothing in common. One is a conversation with your provider. The other is a job inside your home, and no upgrade to your package will touch it.
The difference in one sentence
Broadband is the connection from the outside world to your router. Wifi is the connection from your router to your devices. If the broadband is slow, everything is slow everywhere. If the wifi is the problem, speed changes depending on where you stand.
Test one: wired against wireless
This is the test that settles it. Plug a laptop directly into the router with a network cable, switch the wifi off on that machine, and run a speed test. Then unplug it, switch the wifi back on, stand in the room where the trouble happens, and run the same test again.
- Slow on the cable as well as on wifi means the broadband itself is slow. Ring your provider.
- Good on the cable and poor on wifi means the broadband is fine and your wifi coverage is the problem.
- No cable to hand? Stand right next to the router and test, then test again in the difficult room. It is not as clean, but the pattern usually shows.
Test two: next to the router against the room that struggles
Run the same test in three or four places: beside the router, one room away, in the room that always struggles, and at the far end or upstairs. Write the numbers down with the room and the time. What you want is not one number but the shape of the drop. A gentle fall as you move away is normal. A cliff edge, where one room is far worse than those either side of it, means something there is blocking the signal.
Test three: at different times of day
Test the same room in the morning and again in the evening when the household is all online. Broadband that is fine early and poor later points at congestion, or at a package without the capacity for how the house now uses it. Wifi that is bad at all hours, whoever is home, points at coverage instead.
What a speed test does and does not tell you
A speed test measures the connection between one device, in one spot, at one moment, and a server elsewhere. Useful, but narrower than people assume.
- It cannot tell you whether a low number is the broadband or the wifi, which is why you test on a cable too.
- A test on an old phone or an ageing laptop may be limited by the device, not the connection.
- Download speed is only part of it. Upload speed matters for video calls and backups, and the delay figure, sometimes called ping, matters more for calls and games.
Why houses break wifi
Wifi is a radio signal, and it does not care how good your broadband package is. It weakens with distance and is absorbed by whatever it passes through. Thick solid walls, chimney breasts, foil-backed insulation, underfloor heating and large mirrors are all far worse than modern stud partitions. Every wall costs the signal something, and one that has crossed three is not much use when it arrives.
That is why certain homes struggle for reasons that have nothing to do with broadband. A long floorplan puts the far end beyond the router's useful reach. An extension usually has a solid original outside wall now sitting in the middle of the house, and that wall is the worst obstacle in the building. A converted garage is the same story, at the far end. In each case the internet is fine and the delivery is broken, so a faster package changes nothing.
What actually helps
- Move the router. It wants to be out in the open, off the floor, roughly central to where you use the internet, and away from the microwave. Inside a cupboard by the front door is the worst spot.
- A mesh system: two or three units around the home working as one network, so devices hand over between them. Usually the answer for a long, extended or three-storey house.
- Wired backhaul where you can get it. A mesh unit cabled back to the router beats one relying on wifi alone, so run a cable to the far end during any decorating.
- Retire an ancient router. Providers replace them for a reason, and an old one struggles with a house full of devices.
Plug-in extenders sometimes help and sometimes make matters worse, because a badly placed one repeats a weak signal and creates a second network your devices cling to. If you tried one and it did not help, that is not your fault. And if the wired test came out slow, none of this applies: take it up with your provider instead.
